Chithirai Pongal Therottam

A large number of devotees thronged near Sivakasi Theradimukku to participate in the annual temple car festival held as part of the Sivakasi Chithirai Pongal Festival, today. After special pujas were performed to the presiding deities, Badrakaliamman and Vinayaka, the event began from Theradimukku at 04:00 p.m.. Devotees pulled the decorated temple car which carried the idols of presiding deities Goddess Badrakaliamman and Vinayaka. The procession covered the four car streets of Sivakasi town. Enthusiastic devotees, including large number of school and college students, pulled the car through the four Car Streets of Sivakasi town. The decorated small Vinayaka car reached its destination in around one hour. The big temple car procession began at 05:15 p.m. and it reached near Agni Vinayakar Kovil turning. Devotees prepared and offered pongal to the Goddess. Hundreds of people witnessed Therottam Festival in Sivakasi. A huge posse of policemen, assisted by Traffic Constable and volunteers of Sivakasi Hindu Nadar Uravinmurai, regulated the large gathering. A huge crowd witnessed the colourfully decorated car from the top of various buildings. Some Sivakasians captured the golden moments of therottam in their mobile phones and digital cameras. Drizzling during temple car procession, did not pose any hurdle to the devotees. It is expected that the temple car will reach its destination in one or two days.
