Three-day printing expo begins at Sivakasi

A three-day conference-cum-exhibition on printing and allied machineries, Sivakasi Printex 2014, organised by Sivakasi Master Printers’ Association began here on Friday.

The exhibition is aimed at popularising the industry and to attract new players, especially younger generation into the industry which was growing at a faster pace, said president of All India Federation of Master Printers A.M.S.G. Ashokan.

“Awareness of the opportunities in the printing industry was lacking among entrepreneurs. Besides catering to the growing printing and packaging needs of various industries, the export avenues too in the sector was increasing,” Mr. Ashokan said.

Sivakasi had over 6,000 printing and other allied units. The fireworks and matches industries were the major customers for the printing industry, he said. These two sectors alone contributed to around 70 per cent of the jobs to the printing units.

Besides the industry was into printing books, diaries, packing materials and labels among others.

“While the annual turnover is estimated to be around Rs.2,000 crore, the export last year was around Rs.200 crore,” he said.

The exhibition has on display several digital printers, cutting and folding machines, box-making machines, paper products, spare parts for the machineries, chemicals and consumables in over 100 stalls.
