Students come up with safety device

A team of students of P.S.R. Engineering College, Sivakasi, has come out with a rail safety device, which is capable of preventing accidents caused by the presence of objects on track.

The ‘security sensor,’ which is now in test mode, comes with three sensors, aerial transformers, micro controller and receiver sensor. Its first sensor will identify objects, such as stone; the second one will identify animals or human beings; and the third sensor will find out damage to track. The sensors are capable of sending alarms to the locomotive driver and the nearest railway station.

The micro controllers in the device can measure damage to rail track within a distance of 10 metres and send out an alarm.

According to a press release, the radio frequency meter will send radio magnetic waves to the railway office about the objects identified on the train’s path. The receiver sensor can detect dangerous objects near the rail track and send verbal messages to officials. The security sensor has been devised by V. Ram Prasath, R. Subburaj and Sripadmanathan, final-year electronics and communication engineering students, under the guidance of Balasubramanian, Assistant Professor.
