16 More Taluks to Boost Revenue Dept Work: CM

CHENNAI: With a view to provide the services of the government expeditiously to the public, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Monday announced that 16 more taluks and five more revenue divisions would be created during the current financial year at a total expenditure of Rs 17.65 crore.

The new taluks would be created by bifurcating and restructuring some of the existing taluks and revenue divisions. With this, the total number of taluks in the State would go up from 269 to 285,while the number of revenue divisions would go up from 80 to 85. Making a suo motu statement in the State Assembly, the Chief Minister said, during the past four years, four revenue divisions, 49 new taluks and 59 firkas have been created in the state with a view to expedite the services of the Revenue Department. To strengthen this effort further, 16 more taluks would be created at an expenditure of Rs 16 crore.

Stating that there was no revenue division in Chennai district, the Chief Minister said, during the current year, two new revenue divisions with Egmore and Tondiarpet as their headquarters would be formed.

Similarly, Madurai Revenue Division would be bifurcated to form a revenue division with Melur as its headquarters. Coimbatore division would be bifurcated to form a new division — Coimbatore North. Sivakasi division would be bifurcated to form a new division with Sattur as its headquarters in Virudhunagar. The new Revenue Divisions would be created at a total expenditure of Rs 1.65 crore.
