Paralympics 2016: Mariappan Wins Gold

Atheletes Mariyappan Thangavelu and Varun Singh Bhati have made India proud after winning gold and bronze in Men’s High Jump in the Paralympic Games at Rio.

Tamil Nadu’s Mariappan Thangavelu, who snatched his ticket to Paralympics with a 1.78m leap at the IPL Grand Prix event, is only the third Indian to win a gold at the Paralympic Games with an outstanding leap of 1.89m.

USA’s Sam Grewe took silver with his 1.86m jump, leaving Bhati for the bronze.

Bronze-medalist Bhati, who bagged a gold medal at the 2014 China Open Athletics Championship, has become a hero overnight.

India’s Sharad Kumar too performed well while contesting against athletes with lower-limb disabilities, however, was just a little bit shy with a 1.77m leap to claim the fifth position.

Both Thangavelu and Bhati’s victory marks the first time ever that two spots were held by athletes of the country at the podium finish.
