2021 Sivakasi Chithirai Pongal begins with Kodiyetram

The traditional flag hoisting ceremony to mark the start of Chithirai Pongal festival in Sivakasi was conducted on 4th May 2021, Tuesday, at Badrakaliamman Temple. Devotees were not allowed due to second wave of covid pandemic. The car procession and Vesham Poduthal, a highlight of the 10 day annual event, won’t be organised this year due to COVID-19 restrictions. Last year due to pandemic curbs, Panguni Pongal and Chithirai Pongal festivals were cancelled. Last month devotees were allowed to worship Mariamman, for Panguni Pongal, whereas for Chithirai Pongal, due to Corona Outbreak in Sivakasi, devotees are not allowed to worship Badrakaliamman. Due to the second wave of COVID-19 virus this year that has been sweeping the entire country, the Chithirai Pongal festival is planned to be celebrated in a simple way and the temple authorities have decided to celebrate inside the temple itself. And suspend the car festival and vesham poduthal in view of the restrictions and to ensure the safety of the people. Last Tuesday, without devotees the holy flag was hoisted to mark the commencement of the 2021 Chithirai Pongal festival. Due to the pandemic restrictions, the procession and other events would be held inside the Mariamman temple. Every year fireworks show and light music will be held. This year fireworks show was organised for 5 minutes only.
