Use of banned polythene bags in Sivakasi

Sivakasi Municipality enforced a major eco-friendly move by banning the use of polythene carry bags within the town limits, from 1st January 2012. It was in practise for first three one months. Merchants, commercial establishments and general public were fined, if they found using the carry bags, in Sivakasi limits. On January 2012, in Sivakasi, carry bags were almost replaced by Disposable Shopping Bags, traditional manja pai and koodais. Disposable Shopping Bags were sold out for Re.1 to Rs.3. Florists sold and packed flowers in banana leaves. Sandhanams also packed in banana leaves. In hotels and restaurants Sivakasians seen with thooku vaalis, manja pais and koodais. Day by day polythene usage occupied the place of koodai, Disposable Shopping Bags and manja pai, once again. Earlier, due to fear of fine, sellers pack commodities in newspapers and banana leaves. And now they packing it only in polythene bags and customers too happily return home with free giant. If you buy a parcel meal, that will expose the extensive use of polythene bags. You can get 8-10 polythene bags. Almost everyone of us have enough awareness about the dangers of using polythene bags. Local body officials should monitor and slapped a fine for the usage of polythene bags. Its not only the responsiblity of the Municipality, but also ours too. It rests in our hands only to change sivakasi as an eco friendly town. And this is the right time to use our koodai, manja pai and thooku vaali, once again.
