Use of banned polythene bags in Sivakasi

Sivakasi Municipality enforced a major eco-friendly move by banning the use of polythene carry bags within the town limits, from 1st January 2012. It was in practise for two months. Merchants, commercial establishments and general public were fined, if they found using the carry bags, in Sivakasi limits. Ban on polythene bags showed good results, in the town. Due to fear of fine, sellers pack commodities in newspapers and banana leaves. And after February 2012 they packing it in polythene bags and customers too happily return home with free giant. Though Sivakasi Municipality on several occasions had asked the commercial establishments and general public not to use the polythene bags, the pleas did not yield results, after the month of March 2012. The commercial establishments should urge to cooperate with the Local body and avoid handing over goods in polythene bags. Sivakasi residents should also realise the threat of polythene bags and start using eco-friendly bags such as koodai, manja pai and thooku vaali.
