Women Cell Conference for Women Empowerment at ANJAC

A State Level Conference on "Education: a Means for Women Empowerment" was organised by Women Cell of Ayya Nadar Janaki Ammal College, Sivakasi on 24th January 2014, Friday. The function was presided over by the Principal Dr.s.Baskaran. His presidential address supported by a power point presentation revealed statistical data that brought to light the development seen by women in the field of education.

The conference began with the first sitting taken over by Dr.C.Sarathambal, Head and Chairman, Department of Comparative Literature, Madurai Kamaraj University. She gave a guest lecture on the topic "Status of Women and Social Oppressions". She pointed out how women were subjected to atrocities in the name of chastity in contrast to the Matrilineal system in which women enjoyed great esteem. She also hinted at some social oppression to which women have become victims.

In the second sitting, Mrs.Sukanya Jegannathan, Correspondent of Siddhu School, Madurai gave a special address. She spoke about the problems women face in the society and also stated that the way to good life is to adhere to one’s own tradition and culture.

The third special invitee for the day Mrs. Thilagabama delivered a beautiful talk on "Will the Women affix in Education". She pointed out how the women in the male dominated society being bound to the social systems and customs are deprived of her individuality and liberty.

In the fourth sitting, Mrs.Sivasankari Kathiravan, the wife of Municipal Chairman Dr.Kathiravan directed his focus on the rights of women in education and society in the current years. She drew examples from Vedic times to the present to show how women were subjugated and ill treated. She showed how education could be an instrument in bringing out the potential latent in a woman.

The last guest speaker of the fifth session, Mrs.Premalatha, Headmistress of Coronation Girls School, Sivakasi highlighted the utilitarian values of education in the uplifting of an individual as well as the society. Thus she beautifully revealed how education denied to a woman hampers the progress of the society.

The conference ended with the prizes being distributed for Poster Presentation competition. The arrangement for the function had been carried out by the Women Cell Coordinator Dr.R.Sorna Priya backed by the other Women Cell Members. The conference was a great success with the participation of girl students from other colleges as well as from ANJAC.
