08-03-2014 8th March 2014 - Pavala Rajesh Kumar Jeyabalan Kummi dance season in Sivakasi Theru kattu Pongal is celebrated on Masi month of Tamil Calendar every year, in Sivakasi and the festival is famous in majority streets of the town. Therukkettu Pongal is celebrated in Sivakasi for more than 100 years. As a part of Therukattu Pongal, for eight days, Kummi will be performed by the girls and women of the street, accompanying kummi song, in front of the small temple (Poodam). The women and girls in the street stand in a circle and clap their hands according to the rhythm of the dance. One of the women leads the singing team while the rest of the group takes up the chorus.
