Devotees throng Badrakaliamman Temple amidst rain

Chithirai Pongal Kayirukuthu festival was celebrated in Sivakasi, today. Large number of devotees take part in Vesham Poduthal ( swearing of white and black dots in their body and having neem leaves in their hands ) and sings the song Aahoi Ayyaahoi. Devotees carried mulaipaari, agni chatti, 1000 kannu paanai, and maavilakku. Some devotees perform nerthikadan such as Padha Kaanikai, Kan Malar, Muthu Poduthal, Kayirukuthudhal and mottai podudhal. Sevaral fans club and Social Clubs in Sivakasi distributed free Butter Milks, Rose milk, Sarbath, Lemon Juices and Paanai Karam to the public. The devotees did vesham poduthal braving the showers which began in the early morning and continues throughout the day. While many devotees carried umbrellas to protect themselves from the rain, the majority of them made do without any sort of protection. Sivakasi Hindu Nadar Uravinmurai arranged the festival in a grand and in an systematic manner. The temple and police administration have made special arrangements to conduct the festival in a smooth manner. Earlier, there was huge crowd seen in all the mutton and chicken stalls, throughout the day. In Sivakasi, price of Mutton is Rs.550 a kg. and Chicken is Rs.160 a kg..
