Sugarcane begins arriving in Sivakasi

As the Pongal Festival is just a day away, truckloads of sugarcane and Panangilangu begin arriving in Sivakasi town for last two days. Pongal Festival is considered incomplete without these juicy canes. The edible black sugarcane variety, a must at every household celebrating the Pongal festival, was sold at Rs.350 /- a bunch (15 canes) one piece of sugarcane cost Rs.40/- to Rs.50, near Sivan Kovil, the main wholesale market in Sivakasi. Turmeric and ginger plants, which are other essential crops for the festival, will also arrive on 14th January 2015, Wednesday. Sugarcane to turn expensive this Pongal also.
