Engineering College, Sivakasi, has designed an innovative wheel chair which will be of immense help to physically challenged and elderly persons. The innovative e-wheel chair, which works on electro-magnetic induction principle, has a unique feature: it can also monitor the heartbeat and body temperature of the person using it. According to a press release from P. S. R. Engineering College, the wheel chair can be operated with a mini magnet placed in the tongue of the user. The chair will move in the direction of the movement of the tongue. Four magnetic sensors fitted to a head-set control the movement of the chair. The pulse sensor and temperature sensor will continuously monitor the heart beat and body temperature and if any abnormal condition is detected they will send an automatic alert message to a pre-stored mobile number. The laboratory model of the e-wheel chair, designed by N. Neerkaathalingam, R. Madhusudhan and R. Thirupathi, under the guidance of K. Raja, Assistant Professor, Department of ECE, costs around Rs. 16, 000. The model works on a 12 volt battery and more features such as solar power storage, monitoring user location and prolonged battery life for long-distance travel can be added to it, says the press release. |
