Panguni Pongal begins with Kodiyetram

The traditional flag hoisting ceremony to mark the start of Panguni Pongal festival in the Crackers City was conducted on 11th April 2021, Sunday, at Mariamman Temple, with a limited number of devotees turning up for the event. The car procession and Vesham Poduthal, a highlight of the 10 day annual event, won’t be organised this year due to COVID-19 restrictions. Last year due to pandemic curbs, Panguni Pongal and Chithirai Pongal festivals were cancelled. Most of the towns in Virudhunagar District organised on 4th and 5th of April 2021, whereas due to some election reasons, Panguni Pongal date was postponed in Sivakasi. Similarly, due to the second wave of COVID-19 virus this year that has been sweeping the entire country, the Panguni Pongal festival is planned to be celebrated in a simple way and the temple authorities have decided to suspend the car festival and vesham poduthal which was scheduled on April 21 and April 19 in view of the restrictions and to ensure the safety of the people. Yesterday, the holy flag was hoisted to mark the commencement of the 2021 Panguni Pongal festival. Due to the pandemic restrictions, the procession and other events would be held inside the Mariamman temple.
