Sivakasi Celebrates Saraswathi and Ayudha Poojai with Traditional Fervour Amid Mild Showers
23-10-2026 Sivakasi Celebrates Saraswathi and Ayudha Poojai with Traditional Fervour Amid Mild Showers Saraswathi Poojai and Ayudha Poojai were celebrated with traditional enthusiasm across Sivakasi, on 19th October 2026, Monday, with offices, industries, factories and business establishments wearing a festive look. Mild showers during the celebrations failed to dampen the festive spirit of the people. Offices and industrial establishments were beautifully decorated with vazhai kandru (banana saplings), colourful festoons and flower garlands. Machinery, tools and equipment were thoroughly cleaned and adorned with sandalwood paste (sandanam) and vermilion (kungumam) as part of the traditional Ayudha Poojai rituals. Special prayers were performed, seeking prosperity, safety and success in their respective trades. Following the poojas, traditional offerings such as sundal, vilampazham (wood apple), pori and chola pori were distributed among staff and industrial workers. The festive demand also reflected in the prices of pooja essentials in local markets. Vilampazham was sold for Rs.10 to Rs.20, while small packets of pori and chola pori were priced at Rs.10 each. The price of vazhai kandru witnessed a notable increase this year, rising from Rs.30 last year to Rs.50 per sapling (set), adding to the festive expenditure of households and business establishments. Mild Showers Fail to Dampen Festive Spirit Interestingly, the weather remained relatively favourable during Saraswathi Poojai and Vijayadasami, with only mild showers reported across Sivakasi. The intermittent drizzle did not affect the celebrations. This was in contrast to the Vinayagar Chathurthi idol immersion day, when continuous rainfall throughout the day accompanied the procession. Despite the incessant downpour, Sivakasi residents enthusiastically participated in the immersion celebrations, displaying their unwavering festive spirit. Similarly, the mild showers during Saraswathi Poojai and Vijayadasami did little to interrupt the festive atmosphere. With Vijayadasami observed as a holiday, offices, industries and several business establishments remained closed, allowing workers and their families to celebrate the auspicious occasion. The twin festivals once again brought together Sivakasi's industrial and business communities in a spirit of devotion, gratitude and celebration. |
