Sivakasians Protest Power Cut

More than 10,000 Sivakasians observed fast strike today, to protest long power outages that often extend to more than 16 hours a day, near Sivakasi Town EB Office.

The extended power cuts have brought production down to almost 20 percent in more than 2,000 industrial units, including printing and allied business and match works. Small and medium industries in and around Sivakasi suffered the worst because the owners and workers were unable to complete work in time. And in the process they lost customers.

Around 15 associations in Sivakasi participated in the protest against power cut. Mr.A.P.Selvarajan, Sri Kaliswari Fireworks Private Limited Sivakasi, inaugurated the protest. Some people wore black badge, some bring hand fan (oelai Visiri) and hurricane lights. Some raised slogans demanding regular power supply. Mr.A.M.S.G.Ashokan, Arasan Group of Industries, in his speech said that, the permanent solution for this power outage is to build a power plant for Sivakasi. The power plant project will be launched soon, in Sivakasi. Initial amount of Rs.1000 will be collected from every house, for the project. Tariff will be around Rs.3/- per unit, he added. His speech has come as a welcome relief for the Sivakasians.

At evening, Industrial unit owners and trade union leaders met the Sivakasi EB officials and asked for scheduled power cut. The officials promised to give uninterrupted power supply for six hours from 6:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.. And there will be no power supply from 12:00 p.m. to 06:00 p.m., after that there will be one-hour power cuts almost every other hour.

The protest against power cut was fully successful and observed in a smooth manner.
