Workshop on Translation: Theory and Practice

The UG and PG department of English organized a two day workshop on Translation: Theory and Practice sponsored by the UGC and the Management ANJAC on 21.1.2013 and 22.1.2013. Around 100 participants from 15 colleges participated in the workshop. Mr. M. Moovendhan, Head, Dept. of English (UG) welcomed the gathering. The Principal, Dr. S. Baskaran, presided over the function and lit up the kuthuvilakku.

Dr. B. Jeyanthi, Head& Assistant Prof. of English, Anna University, Tirunelveli delivered a lecture on Introduction to Translation in the morning session. She gave the tips for the students to translate from Tamil to English with reference to the poems of Vairamuthu and Thamizhachi Thanga Pandian.

In the afternoon Dr. Savithri Subramanian, Associate Professor of English (retd.), St. Mary’s College, Tuticorin dealt with Translation as a Work Force. The students were taught the nuances and techniques while translating from the source language to the target language.

On 22.1.2013 the morning session began with video conference through SKYPE. Dr. Anil Pinto, Asst. Prof. of English from Christ University, Bangalore delivered a lecture on configuring translation theory. The participants were made to be aware of using translation theories is not a mandatory process. They can use the theories to the minimum level.

In the afternoon session Dr. G. Dharmaraja, Assistant Professor of English from Madras Christian College, Chennai taught the participants how cultural challenges has to be overcome while translation. The workshop ended with the feedback session. Mrs. B. Rathika, Head, Department of English (PG) proposed vote of thanks. Certificates were issued to the participants by the Principal.
